FUNNIES OF THE MONTH

VILLAGE MANAGEMENT UPDATE

Village Management would like to take the opportunity to remind residents of our upcoming meetings scheduled for next Monday the 14th November. This meeting has been requested by the resident committee as an ideal forum whereby residents queries and any concerns can be discussed directly with management.

To ensure all questions can be answered it has been requested that residents do provide their questions to management with enough notice prior to the meeting dates to allow time for management to research or seek guidance from trades or accounting personnel. Questions can be emailed to Leah directly at info@championlifestyle.com.au or via placing a hard copy of correspondence in the Village Managers mailbox located at the front of the office.

Residents please be aware that the Clubhouse has been booked for our tradesperson annual Christmas Party on Friday 2nd December from 1pm – 6pm and we therefore ask all residents to please be mindful that this event is taking place.

As our Village continues to grow at its rapid rate we are delighted to now be able to provide a courtesy buggy for both current residents and also perspective residents to tour the Village. We have worked closely with your Resident Committee and have nominated a few designated drivers to support residents attend social functions. We think this is a great addition to our infrastructure to support residents age in place in a safe and welcoming environment.

On a recent walk around the Village I came across Kev’s corner in all its glory!!! What a wonderful sight that Spring has arrived across our site. Marg on behalf of all of us we thank you sincerely for your efforts in attending to Kev’s patch.

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION COMMUNITY

Vanessa Darrell – Lot 66

Vanessa has joined the Village in October, at Lot 66, after 26 years in Gosnells.

Prior to that Vanessa lived and worked in different locations around the state. After a successful career as a Senior Project Manager in the Public Service, Vanessa decided to go with an early retirement and explore her other interests including art, music and living a quiet life.

“The safety and security that the Village offers is a real attraction, but so are the shared facilities, and the friendly atmosphere. Everyone has been so welcoming”

Though Vanessa has moved into The Village on her own, you will no doubt be seeing Vanessa and her sisters (Elaine & Sharon) around the Village.

You can find Vanessa at Lot 66, 16 Calm Drive – or just look for the house with the metal grass tree out the front!

Ian & Erica Fingland – Lot 69

Ian and Erica Fingland have moved into Lot 69 which is at 19 Calm Drive.

oth are from Pioneering families from WA, and they have a passionate interest in family history. Erica’s family were on the first fleet into the Swan River in 1829. Ian’s family came from Victoria to Doodlakine and had to clear the land before beginning farming there. They have lots of interesting stories, varied experiences and memorabilia to share. Their interest in family history has led them to the gathering lots of information and including writing books on the subject.

They have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren all in the Perth area and with whom they have lots of interactions so you may see them around fairly regularly, either visiting or staying for a few days.

Erica worked in aged care as well as with clients with mental health and disability concerns. Ian was an electrical /electronic specialist and was often having to sort out and correct problems on mine sites.

Apart from family history Erica is interested in craft, sewing and gardening. Ian is a model railway enthusiast and hopes to set up his model railway when he has settled. They hope to take part in Village activities once they are settled into their new house.

They own a caravan and spent several months living in it while awaiting the construction of their new home at our Village. They enjoy going off road and going 4wheel driving and have even done the appropriate driver training. They have found many remote and beautiful places on their travels.

Please have a chat to them and welcome them to our community when you see them around.

Window Cleaning Village Pricing

Village Management has been approached by a newly opened window cleaning provider and is keen to seek if residents would be interested in having their internal and external windows cleaned. An expression of interest sheet has been placed in on the resident notice board and if you would like to put your name down we will then liaise with the contractor directly to get a bulk price for residents to consider.

Alternatively, if you would like to liaise directly with contractor you are welcome to do so on the information provided.

FUNNIES OF THE MONTH

VILLAGE MANAGEMENT UPDATE

We are delighted to advise that our monthly council pool Inspection report has delivered perfect test results for the entire 12 month period. Village Management along with all residents would like to sincerely thank Les Connolly who has almost completely independently undertaken this role on behalf of the Village. His diligence and attention to the pool operations cannot be understated.

The village remains in liaison with City of Armadale and the WA Health Department as we work towards receiving an exemption to our pool facility grading which will allow professional water aerobics courses to be undertaken due to popular demand. Progress has been made and a dedicated instructor who will form part of this exemption status has been engaged. We look forward to promoting this class in the very near future to all residents.

Residents will have noticed the solar bollard lights have recently been installed around the lodge alfresco area just in time to assist residents navigate their way home after enjoying the clubhouse facilities with neighbours on those balmy summer nights that are just around the corner.

With the village development progressing rapidly we have also ensured new entrance signage identifying new roads within the development are required and these will be installed during the month to assist family and visitors alike navigate our ever-growing site.

Through constructive consultation with SCI we are very pleased to advise that the Fetch TV Channel is available within residents villa’s and should residents wish to utilise this station they simply need to contact Rob.

Librarian has been sourced. A very special thanks to Susan who is currently residing in Lot 10 with her husband Ross whilst they await the completion of their forever home at Lot 79 for taking up our call out of a dedicated Librarian for the Village. Susan on behalf of the Resident Committee, Management Team and all residents we thank you for offering your services to us all in ensuring our library remains neat, tidy and relevant for the benefit of all residents.

As per resident requests, the mens change room in the lodge has now been fitted with a bench seat plus the gym now has a ballet bar for rehab balance exercises.

Village Management is also pleased to announce we will be hosting an informal quarterly management update session for all residents to attend on November 7th at 1pm in the Lodge and we encourage topics of interest be advised to Leah 1 week prior to the meeting to ensure we are well positioned to answer your query or questions at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there to hear how your village is progressing.

WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY – STAFF

As like our Village our team is ever-growing, and we are very pleased to welcome Kelly Twight who has recently commenced with us doing fortnightly Fridays from 9:30am-1:30pm in the role of supporting residents. She will be available to residents for advice on the ACAT Home Care assessment processes and she will be looking into the current and future needs of our residents home care support needs.

Kelly commenced nursing back in 2004 and her most recent experience is in the role of Community Health Nurse with Silver Chain where she has been for 2 years. Prior organisations Kelly has been employed by in the role of Registered Nurse/ Midwife include the Armadale Health Service, SJOG Murdoch, Sonic Health Plus and The Ridge Medical Centre Baldivis.

Our goal as a Village is to one day have an onsite home care support team available for residents needs as they age in place. We encourage residents to please pop in and say hi to Kelly as we look forward to having her valuable expertise and advice.

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION COMMUNITY

Helen Rubin – Lot 13

Welcome to Helen who has moved into Lot 13 at 4 Nature Vista and is accompanied by her dog Jed, a 13-year old Basenji/Terrier cross. In late September she made the move from another lifestyle village in Brisbane to Champion Lakes.

Helen was born in the US and attended University there until work aspirations resulted in her residing in Canada and Europe. In her younger years, employment included hotel cleaning, cooking, picking fruit on a kibbutz, and as a resort manager. She has also worked and studied in many other countries, including France, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand & Scotland.

Helen immigrated to Brisbane in 1981, but she has mainly lived in Cairns and Townsville, where she worked as a health educator, primary and high school teacher and guidance officer. For two years she was an advocate for children and young people in foster care. More recent employment has been at TAFE, Stuart Prison and as a lecturer and tutor in education, social work and other areas at James Cook and Deakin Universities. Helen has also volunteered with health organisations, at the aquarium of Reef HQ and the RSPCA.

Her many interests include crafts, gardening, meditation, oil painting, travelling, walking/hiking and water sports; so she is never likely to be bored!

In November, her son Paul, who has been living in England for many years, is moving to Perth with his wife and two young children. So she is looking forward to many years of family time.

Bill Stubberfield – Lot 40

Welcome to Bill who has come to Lot 40, 20, Lifestyle Lane. He is accompanied by Cody, his 10 year old faithful little papillon cross companion and I am sure they will be pleased to greet you as he is seen walking around the Village.

Bill was born in WA and lived in Joondanna and the Mount Hawthorn area whilst attending school at Osborne Park Primary then CBC, Leederville and then to St Patrick’s Technical College.  He went into accounting and was employed with the State Government Auditor’s office before running a TAB Agency. He then joined Bell Brothers as an internal auditor and became Office Manager when Boral took over Bell Resources.

Bill was married at the age of 22 and enjoyed 52 years of a happy marriage with himself and wife Susie residing in in various areas including Scarborough, Coolbellup, Canning Vale and Byford where they were involved and were committee members of the Byford Bowling Club with Bill becoming President of the Bowling Club.

They have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren, all the boys live and work locally with 2 boys working with FESA and the other with Kone Cranes in the construction area. He already has contacts in the Village as his son Troy is married to Rosalie’s daughter Karin (Lot 25) so had all the village information easily available before he made his decision to join us.

Bill and Susie owned a caravan from their early 20’s and travelled extensively within and around Australia and he has a detailed map of Australia with their many expeditions highlighted. A very impressive and thorough picture of their incredible knowledge and journeys in this country he shares proudly. When he sold the caravan recently it was the 6th they had owned. Unfortunately, his wife passed away in 2017 and he decided to downsize and recent medical concerns meant his family helped move him in here.

He is now enjoying getting to know people in the Village, and we will no doubt see him at some of our functions when he is settled.

Leanne Tanner – Lot 41

Welcome to Leanne Tanner in Lot 41 at 22 Lifestyle Lane.

Leanne was born in WA and spent most of her childhood in Wanneroo.  After leaving school Leanne joined the Air Force where she met her husband Grahame. After they were married, he was posted to Butterworth, Malaysia and spent a 2 year posting there.

They were then sent to Wagga Wagga in NSW and their children Tim and Melissa were born there.

They later moved to Richmond, NSW where the children attended primary school. Upon retirement they moved to Perth and lived in Armadale then moved to Kinross then to the canals at Yunderup. They also lived in Port Hedland for 4 years where their son, Tim lives and grandchildren were born. Leanne visits them regularly.

Leanne was in communications as a cryptographer in the Air Force and later worked in various jobs in administration. Grahame always worked in the aircraft maintenance area.  After retiring they sold their house and bought a caravan and toured round Australia before Covid and then were centred within WA until Grahame passed away in 2021. Leanne’s daughter lives in Southern River so now Leanne is conveniently located and can look after her young grandchildren on a regular basis.

Leanne enjoys doing puzzles and crosswords as well as knitting and crochet and is a follower of AFL and Rugby League. She is enjoying being in her new home as well as socialising and has felt that she has experienced a lovely welcome since being in the Village.

A group of our residents rallied together and organised a trip to Melbourne during the past month and it sounds by all accounts they had a wonderful trip. Here are some happy snaps of them at the Dolly Parton 9 to 5 show and out for dinner in Southbank.

The wonderful editor of our “Welcome to the Community” column, Sheila Parker is currently enjoying a well-earned break in Fiji. Looks like she is certainly enjoying herself overseas and it’s great that travel has recommenced for many of us.

With her Majesty’s passing all of us here at the Village thank you for your service to the Commonwealth Queen Elizabeth. Village owners Jane and Keith Henville paid tribute to her Majesty on our flag mast in the village.

What an incredible turn our we witnessed for the inaugural carpet bowls tournament that commenced last Sunday in the Clubhouse. Well done to all who came along and enjoyed their Sunday afternoon in friendly company.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Faye Ibrahim and Ron Prebble are currently looking after the garden and would like to thank all those residents who turned out for the gardening meeting last Thursday 1st September.

Main outcome of that meeting is that residents are being given the opportunity to take responsibility for an individual plot in the raised garden beds and this initiative is already being very well received. Should you wish to take up this offering please liaise with either Ron or Faye and they will very happily allocate you a spot.

There will also be a collective area of community plantings for the village residents to enjoy as has been the past experience however to ensure that these individual plots are not disturbed, we ask that residents do not help themselves direct from the garden area. Produce will be available via the clubhouse kitchen area as normal.

A Community Garden established by those who enjoy the hobby is a great way to enjoy the fruits of your labour in a fun and very welcoming environment whilst absorbing a bit of Vitamin D at the same time.

FUNNIES OF THE MONTH

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION COMMUNITY

Lot 71 – Sue Dahl

We are delighted this month to welcome Sue to Lot 71, 15 Calm Drive. Sue hasn’t held back in becoming part of our vibrant and fun community and it was fabulous to see her at the breakfast last Sunday morning. We hope she enjoyed meeting us as much as we did her.

Sue originally from Brisbane, came for a holiday to Perth at the age of 21 years, met her husband Peter on the first day and never really left. She was married a year later and settled in Thornlie originally where they raised 2 children, a daughter called Brooke and a son Luke.

After 7 years in Thornlie they moved to Huntingdale and remained there for some 23 years whilst the children grew into adulthood

Her latest move was to Harrisdale about 14 years ago and after Peter retired, they spent 5 years travelling to Hong Kong, and other nearby countries in Asia, they loved going to Bali and visited there every 6 months. They also travelled around Australia along Highway 1 as well as through the middle on several occasions. Sue decided to downsize from a big house and garden into the village after her husband’s passing 12 months ago.

Career wise Sue initially undertook secretarial work. Peter was an Insurance Broker and set up his own business so Sue became a full time voluntary worker in the business as well as a busy Mum!! Sue is interested in and played netball and enjoys most other sports also. She was also a keen gardener and had a lovely garden in previous homes. We hope she will join us in the community garden when she is able. She also loves reading, crosswords and puzzles.

Her daughter, Brooke, has 2 children, Axel who is aged 7 and Kade is 10 years old and Sue has been involved with the grandchildren on a regular basis and looked after them from the age of 3 months to enable the parents to return to work. They live in Mount Nasura so quite handy for Sue in her new home. Her son, Luke lives in Byford so she is conveniently situated for both families.

We hope Sue will enjoy her life here in the village and we look forward to her participation in the wide range of future events that occur at the Village.

Lot 32 – Meryl McDougall

A very warm welcome to Meryl who is currently residing in Lot 13 until the finishing touches are made on Lot 32, 9 Delight Way.

Meryl is accompanied by Kia, a mini dachshund. Kia is 2 & a half years old and a bit shy at first until she gets to know you and such an adorable little companion for Meryl.

Meryl was born in Wales but lived in Surrey where she went to school until she was 18 and was married at 19. When researching her family tree it was found that she may be related to Ron (Lot 9)!! She met her husband who, although a Scot, actually was a member of the Welsh Guards!! She made up a foursome with a friend to attend the movies in Surrey and met her husband there. His military service was mainly in the Royal residences in England. They moved to Australia in December 1969 with their son, Ian and daughter, Julie. They bought their first house in Maddington where they lived next door to Jim & Diane who are also in the village (Lot 74).

They subsequently moved to Clifton Hills then back to Maddington where they had a beautiful house by the river and stayed there for 26 years. Meryl has now downsized to a smaller and easier place in the village for her permanent home. After retirement Meryl and her husband did some travelling mainly on cruises to Alaska, Canada and UK as well as including coach tours in places of interest before returning by cruise liner. Meryl now has 5 granddaughters and 1 grandson as well as 2 great granddaughters and 1 great grandson, so her family has certainly expanded.

Her daughter Julie lives in Seville Grove and often pops in as do others of the family. Her son lives in Jane Brook so is not quite as easily accessible. Meryl’s interests include knitting and sewing at this stage in her life however she was also keen on quilting but finds that skill a little more challenging now.

VILLAGE MANAGEMENT UPDATE

Line Dancing – Lorna and Robyn have been very pro-active and sourced a Line Dancing instructor to undertake a trial class at the Village in a couple of weeks. Thanks ladies on behalf of all residents for collectively making this activity a reality for the village. All levels welcomed and even those who have never undertaken a dance before are encouraged to attend and simply spectate if they do not necessarily wish to participate straight up. Further details provided as a flyer in this newsletter.

Annual Budget Meeting – Was successfully held on 16th June at the Village Clubhouse with 32 residents in attendance. This annual meeting is a great opportunity for the village community to be provided with information on how their village runs and the costs associated with each line item. It was fabulous to see a great number of residents attend and minutes of that meeting have been distributed to all residents for their reference and record keeping. A reminder that as at the 1st July, 2022 the village operating fee is $110 per week. We advise those residents with a direct debit authority in place, that the new amount will be updated automatically with their banking institution and therefore no action nor new forms need to be completed.

SCAM ALERT

Village Management would like to remind all residents to please be vigilant when receiving emails and SMS notifications. The below article highlights just how clever these scams are becoming.

The ‘damaging’ myGov phishing scam catching out ‘unsuspecting’ Aussies

A damaging new myGov phishing scam is currently circulating and it’s catching out many ‘unsuspecting’ Aussies.

The new scam impersonates myGov and falsely claims that the recipient has an outstanding account refund of $736.98 AUD for the purpose of stealing bank accounts and credit card details.

The generous offer of a significant refund comes at a particularly concerning time for Australians given the current cost of living and growing interest rates which could see many potential victims jump at the chance to receive the hefty payout without taking proper precautions to verify its legitimacy.

“This scam preys on the heightened emotions that tax times brings, and given the attention to detail at every stage, it has potential to be very damaging”, says MailGuard.

According to MailGuard, the sender name displays as “My Gov – Refund Service” and the display address reads ‘isaddresssupport(at)informationconsultancyservices(dot)co(dot)uk’.

The scam message reads, “Our transaction management system detects that you are entitled to receive this payment” and asks customers to “click on the following link and save the refund information” to access the form and claim the refund.

MailGuard warns customers that “after clicking the link, the user is taken to the first phishing site which is almost an exact replica of the myGov login page” and is then “directed to enter the email and password they use for their myGov account to ‘sign in’”.

Customers are then asked to update their personal myGov information to receive the refund, including their credit/debit card name, card number, expiration date, CVV, date of birth and phone number, before pressing the ‘Valider’ (validate in French) button and proceeding to the next page.

The customer is then sent an SMS verification code which they are asked to enter into the page before pressing “confirm”.

MyGov recommends a number of steps to ensure the safety and security of their customer’s private details, advising them to be vigilant in regularly updating their account password and pin numbers and to refrain from sharing their myGov sign-in details with anybody else, along with a number of other recommendations.

MailGuard also urges customers to watch out for a few common signs of illegitimate messages such as those that do not address the customer by name, are from a business you weren’t expecting to hear from, or one that “appears to be from a legitimate company but uses poor English or omits personal details that a legitimate sender would include” or “takes you to a landing page or website that is not the legitimate URL of the company the email is purporting to be sent from”.

Companies such as MailGuard and Scamwatch offer verification services for customers seeking to identify whether or not a message, email, or offer they have received is legitimate.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Deputy Chair Delia Rickard recently warned Australians that “you never know who you are dealing with online”.

“Scammers often pretend to be from a well-known organisation, such as a bank or the government, and they will pretend to offer you something such as money or a benefit, or claim that you are in trouble,” Rickard said.

“Do not click on any links in messages that come to you out of the blue, and never provide any of your personal or banking details to someone you don’t personally know and trust”.

VILLAGE POOL WINS AWARD

A couple of weeks ago Imperial Pools attended the Annual Western Australia Swimming Pool and Spa Association Awards night.

Our Village pool & spa was one of many nominated in its class for Concrete Commercial pool up to $250,000 and Imperial Pools were proudly presented with the Gold Award!!!

We can now officially claim we have an award-winning pool.

Well done to all the construction and delivery teams on such a fabulous result!!!

THE “SCENE” AROUND CHAMPION LAKES

An enjoyable evening was had by those residents who attended the “OH WHAT A NIGHT” musical tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that recently performed at the Astor Theatre in Mt Lawley. With a Chinese dinner before the show our residents settled in and grooved the night away with many smiles and singalongs.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

As our cooler weather has well and truly set in. Our community garden continues to be a source of offering the opportunity to residents to enjoy some Vitamin D on our glorious sunny winter days.

As the soils are prepared for the new season it has been requested that residents please save their used egg shells and provide them to either Sheila or Faye over coming weeks so they can be utilised in the garden beds to provide a good source of calcium.

Reminder that anyone who would like to join the Community Garden team please simply come on down every Thursday between 1pm – 2pm.

They are accompanied by their Little Maltese/ Schitzu dog called Prince who is 9 years old and loves to accompany Alan on his walks around the village. Prince is quite a worrier and doesn’t like being left alone.

Alan and Jenny are both from Berkshire, England, and came to Perth 46 years ago. They have lived in several areas around the Perth Hills and in other locations South of the River. They have enjoyed travelling around Australia and have also lived in Melbourne and on the Mornington Peninsular. They returned to the Perth area in 2018 and lived in Byford prior to moving into the village. Unfortunately, Alan has been spending some time in hospitals mainly Fiona Stanley and Fremantle, and therefore they required to place themselves closer to medical services for convenience.

Alan loves Carpentry and was a Boat Builder. He is also interested in cooking.

During her professional career, Jenny was a Medical Secretary at Royal Perth Hospital mainly, but also other Hospitals in the metro area. She is interested in Animal Welfare and has also worked in this area. Jenny loves doing crosswords and reading, and they both love watching Tennis.

Since moving in, they have enjoyed meeting the friendly people in the village and look forward to saying hello to the many residents they pass when they go for their walks with Alan on his walker and Prince right beside them.

Carol Bowman – Lot 3

A warm welcome also goes to Carol Bowman, a very energetic lady who has moved into Lot 3, whilst she awaits the construction phase to be completed on her forever home at Lot 57, 4 Tradition Road.  She is accompanied by her dog called Chook, who is a very friendly 8-year-old Kelpie Cross who loves attention.

Carol enjoys attending the gym in Kelmscott and is also a member of the Masters’ Athletics Association as a middle-distance runner. Her special interests are the 400m & 800m races, which she is regularly able to compete in.

Carol loves horses and enjoyed the opportunity of working with them from the age of 14 at a riding school in Geraldton. During her career, she has worked with animals in a variety of roles until taking up nursing 20 years ago. She has been at the Parkview Aged Care Facility many years and is still working full time in Aged Care. With a passion for horses, she still owns a 20-year-old Horse called Mardi which is now in a centre for retired horses in Bridgetown, and she likes to visit whenever possible. Prior to moving into the Village, she resided on a property in Darling Downs where she was able to look after Mardi before selling up and coming to join us all and enjoying the Champion Lifestyle at our Village.

THE ‘SCENE’ AROUND AT CHAMPIONS LAKE

Country and Western Evening

Residents enjoyed a fabulously successful Country and Western night in the Village Clubhouse on Saturday 14th May, with a big special thank you going to John & Lou for the sourcing and supply of the hay bales which really set the scene upon entry and Les for tending to the amazing Spit Roast meat enjoyed by all.

The Heartbeat band played great music all night long and also provided entertainment with their joke repertoire in between songs.

Many residents pitched in and helped make it a great night. Well done team Social – Champion Lakes Lifestyle Village!!!!

Scones, Jam & Cream Mornings

The monthly scone, jam & cream mornings are going from strength to strength at the Village. Here’s a couple of photos of the delicious treats served up and enjoyed by our resident community on a regular basis.

We would like to give a massive thanks to our tireless and very talented home cook Dawn for assisting in creating this initiative a couple of months ago and continuing to cook up a storm for us all from her very own kitchen!!

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Our community garden continues to remain available for all to use and enjoy. It’s been great to see residents meeting up on a Thursday between 1pm – 2pm and toiling away and having a laugh.

Remember, all residents are welcome to come along with your snippers and ideas at that time or another time that is convenient to yourself. The garden crew would be happy to see you and all skill levels are very welcome!!!

RESIDENT BUY, SWAP OR SELL

The notice board in the lodge now has a small section dedicated to items that residents may want to Buy, Swap or Sell.

Not everyone visits the lodge so to ensure your Buy, Swap, Sell items get full coverage we will compile a list each month of the items on the board and attach it to the minutes of our monthly committee meetings so that all residents are aware of what items are available.

FUNNIES OF THE MONTH

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION COMMUNITY

Welcome to Laurie and Ralph, who have taken up residence at Lot 11 or 2 Scenery Court.

They have been with us for a couple of weeks and are already beginning to join in and enjoy some of the activities that the village has on offer.

They were both born and bred in Fremantle, have 2 children, a girl aged 45 and a boy aged 39. They have 3 grandchildren aged from 1 to 13 years.

They have leisurely enjoyed a few years travelling around Australia, having sold up in WA a little whilst back and enjoying Queensland and the Victorian/NSW border where their daughter lives.

Upon their return to Perth 3 ½ years ago when their son was married, they bought a home in Hilbert where they lived before moving into the village.

Ralph was a truck driver mainly in fresh produce around the Perth area, having his own truck for a while. In Queensland, he worked on the tracks of the small trains which serviced the Bundaberg sugar industry.

Laurie was a carer in aged care and worked in a nursing home as well as working in community care while in Queensland and Victoria.

Laurie has had many hobbies and is currently doing some diamond art and is looking forward to participating in new activities available in the Village. Ralph has played golf previously and may do so in the future. He is also interested in bowls and darts and will no doubt pursue these here.

Welcome to Myrna Turner, who has moved into Lot 51 or 31 Lifestyle Lane.

She is accompanied by her Staffy/Ridgeback cross called Matilda. As Myrna says when talking about her, she is an old girl of 12 years who enjoys sleeping a lot!!!

Myrna says she is gradually settling in, while still unpacking boxes and finding things!! I think we can all relate to that!

Originally Myrna was a resident in Roleystone being there for 48 years and owned and ran the Kelmscott Drapery for many years. In the 1990s they decided to have a sea change and a change of lifestyle and went to Dongara where they had a large property of 160acres, half of which was beachfront. After 10 years they moved to Bindoon on a 5 acre property with many native trees and they loved being back in the country rather than beach scenery.

Myrna has 4 children, a daughter in Victoria and sons in areas South of the river. She says that her 3 sons and daughter-in -laws are all very supportive of her and she has 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandies in her family. She feels very fortunate she says as all her grandchildren are happily married.

After the death of her husband 13 months ago she lived with her son in Roleystone while  she looked for a property and is delighted with her new home in the village.

She is interested in the craft group and hopes to join in the future when she is settled. She also loves gardening and is waiting for her many pot plants to come here, so she can get herself set up with them.

THE ‘SCENE’ AROUND AT CHAMPIONS LAKE

April was another month of various resident outings and activities undertaken at the village.

Hobby Shed Activity

Marty, Ron and Fred recently attended the local Swap Meet with some proud Hobby Shed made items on display and available for sale.

ANZAC Service at Champion Lakes

Many residents came and partook in a village style dawn service to commemorate our fallen heroes on the morning of the 25th April 2022.

That spectacular sunrise was simply breathtaking, as was the proceeding bacon and egg breakfast held on the club grounds.

Tuesday Morning Jam Sessions

Our Clubhouse facilities become a hive of activity every Tuesday from 10am as residents enjoy the 10-man band that play many of the favourites of all time for all to enjoy over a coffee and chat with their neighbours.

Lunching at Last Drop

A group of our lovely resident community headed off to Midland for a very pleasant lunch at the Last Drop via the village bus.
